backLighting technique and Capturing Tomato Vine Hairs

In food and product photography, we often chase clean highlights and spotless details. But sometimes, embracing high-contrast lighting tells a much more compelling story.

When capturing this vine resting on a ripe tomato, my goal was a deep, moody black background with intense rim light along the branches to reveal their delicate hairs.

The Backlight Struggle

Placing a light directly behind the subject created the glowing edge light I wanted, but it also flooded the entire backdrop, washing out the dark atmosphere.

The Fix

Using my Nikon Z7 II and 50mm macro lens, I knew that although my gear is perfect for this shot, equipment alone wouldn't solve this, it took experience to get it right. I fixed the issue with two key adjustments:

  1. Curving the Backdrop: I bent the backdrop slightly to catch less direct light on background and let shadows fall away naturally.

  2. Light Height adjustment: I adjusted the light height to skim the top of the tomato while catching the back of the branches just right.

I have tried placing a reflector in front of tomato as well, just to see how it looks, but to be honest with you it ruined all beautiful shadows and vibe of the photo. This style sits right between a silhouette and a clear product shot. It takes patience, but nailing that result is completely worth it.
